LONDON - Six chemicals harmful to health and the environment - found in paints, detergents, textiles, book covers and interiors of cars - has been banned in Europe and should be ritirate dal mercato nel giro di tre-cinque anni nei 27 Stati membri (a meno che non sia stata concessa un'autorizzazione per un uso specifico). La decisione, presa dalla Commissione europea, rappresenta uno dei primi effetti di " Reach ", il nuovo regolamento per la registrazione, la valutazione e l'autorizzazione delle sostanze chimiche. Le sostanze nel mirino di Bruxelles (musk xylene, MDA, HBCDD, DEHP, BBP, DBP) sono cancerogene, tossiche per la riproduzione o persistono nell'ambiente e si accumulano negli organismi viventi. Non potranno essere immesse sul mercato o usate, a meno che non sia stata concessa un'autorizzazione per un uso specifico. Soddisfatti i commissari Ue all'Industria e all'Ambiente, Antonio Tajani e Janez Potcnik. Secondo Potocnik questa decisione «segna un passo importante verso una migliore protezione della nostra salute e dell'ambiente», mentre per Tajani «incoraggerà l'industria a sviluppare alternative e a promuovere l'innovazione». La decisione avrà un impatto su diversi settori: dalla cosmetica all'edilizia e all'industria dell'auto, fino al tessile e al cuoio.

LE SOSTANZE  - Ecco i possibili impieghi di queste sostanze.

- MUSK XYLENE: viene impiegato come ingrediente di detergenti, ammorbidenti, agenti smacchianti, deodoranti per la casa e altri prodotto di uso domestico.

- MDA (diamminodifenilmetano): hardening agent in coatings and resins for the manufacture of certain types of pipes. Used as a hardener in adhesives.
- HBCDD (hexabromocyclododecane): flame retardant insulation panels in the construction industry and motor vehicles. In textile applications as a flame retardant in upholstery, fabrics and interiors of cars.
- DEHP (ethylhexyl phthalate): plasticizer which improves the flexibility in materials used in many products for internal and external, such as flooring, roofing, wiring, cables, pipes, profiles, coated fabrics (such as artificial leather for bags or covers books). Also used in adhesives, sealants, rubber, paints and printing inks.
- BBP (butyl benzyl phthalate): plasticizer in materials used for flooring, for the covering of skin and tissue, but also in adhesives, sealants, paints and inks for printers.
- DBP (dibutyl phthalate) is used in plasticizers in indoor and outdoor applications of polymers (such as floors), and textiles advanced.
