Chemical damage of the eye is a rare complication of the opening of the airbag and depend on the leakage through the holes' airbag chemicals used as propellants for inflation the airbag itself. The airbag is inflated by the oxidation of sodium azide. The reaction mixture produces a highly corrosive alkaline consisting of sodium hydroxide and sodium bicarbonate, which can pass through the holes of the airbag.
